"Meals on Wheels" was my first assignment for the New York Times. I pitched the idea after traveling along the Avenue of the Volcanoes in the Ecuadorian Andes, marveling at all the delicious homemade food brought aboard by vendors at every stop. As the bus careened around mountain passes, you'd get a sense for the regional differences in the dishes being sold.
